Social media is constantly changing and I know it can be hard to keep up.
As a professional social media manager, it’s my job to keep on top of those changes so that I can support practices like yours.
Over time, I’ve noticed the same questions crop up time and time again – which is why I put the answers all in one place for you.
Which platform should I be on?
The simple answer is, you should be on the platform your potential clients are on!
This all comes down to knowing and understanding your ideal client. A travel company, for example, would be best to focus on Instagram, Pinterest and TikTok as these are the platforms travellers go to for inspiration.
However, a local builder would be better focusing on Facebook where they can be quickly tagged in local groups when someone is asking for recommendations.

Do I need to be on every platform?
No. There was a time when most businesses had a presence on every platform, but this really isn’t necessary.
It’s better to take a strategic approach and focus your efforts on one or two platforms rather than spreading yourself too thin.
Why doesn’t anyone see my posts?
Now, this really is the million-dollar question!
There are so many reasons your content might not be getting great reach. Here are some possible reasons:
- Your content isn’t great (sorry!)
- You’re not engaging with your followers
- You don’t post consistently
- The platform you are using is prioritising a different type of content
- The time of year – summer is often slower
- You’re not using relevant hashtags
How do I get people to comment on my posts?
The key to getting lots of comments on your posts is to create content that people feel compelled to respond to.
How do you do that?
Well, the easiest way is to ask questions. For a quick win, avoid open-ended questions that involve too much thought. Instead, ask specific questions which don’t require too much time or brain power.
Here are some ideas:
- People like to talk about themselves, so ask them to share memories. For example, a therapist might ask, ‘What’s your favourite self-care activity?’ Or a pet business might ask, ‘How did you choose your dog’s name?’
- Try ‘this or that’ questions relevant to your business e.g. a clothes shop might post, ‘Our new autumn range is out now. Which do you prefer, the red scarf or the orange one?’
- Ask people what they need help with. For example, as a social media manager I might ask, ‘What do you struggle with most when creating content?’
How much time should I spend on social media every day?
This is entirely up to you, but it’s a good idea to spend at least 15-20 minutes on your business platforms a day.
✅ DO Be purposeful with your time and use it wisely. Answer DMs, respond to comments and follow relevant hashtags for inspiration.
🚫 DON’T Waste your time scrolling endlessly and comparing yourself to others.
What should I post on social media?
This will depend on the type of practice you run and the type of content your potential clients want to see from you.
Remember, the most important thing is to create content that inspires your audience to like, share, save and comment on.

How often should I post on social media?
Again, this comes down to how much time you can commit to social media.
The more often you post, the more people will see your content and the faster your account will grow. BUT. And this is a big BUT, you don’t have to be a slave to social media.
You don’t have to post every day (unless that’s easy for you), three to four times a week is fine – with daily engagement if you can – but if you can only manage one really high-quality post a week that’s better than nothing!
The key is consistency. It’s better to post once a week every week than to post every day for a fortnight and then go quiet for a month.
Remember, the majority of clients will check out your practice online before deciding to work with you – so having an active social media presence is essential. Dead accounts might make them question whether or not you’re still in business!
Is it too late to get started on social media?

Do I really need to make videos?
You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do on social media, but there’s no escaping the fact that video is a huge trend right now.
In 2021 TikTok became the world’s most visited domain, beating Google, Facebook and Microsoft! So you can see the appetite for video is HUGE.
Video has also become the most popular form of content on Instagram since the introduction of Reels.
That said, video is more time-consuming and I’m guessing you don’t love the idea of being on camera. The good news is that there are lots of ways to create brilliant videos without showing your face.
